Chameleon (2022)
One Channel Video Installation
Made in Collaboration with Jess Bellamy and Hanyu Sun
Shown at the University of Southern California Glorya Kaufman School of Dance Theater in Los Angeles, CA
April 28, 2022
A large scale video installation on the themes of inclusivity, diversity, warmth and belonging.
Software Used: Adobe After Effects, Adobe Premiere, Touch Designer.
Chameleon is an immersive large scale projection, made up of a composite of four videos. The project was commissioned by the USC Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Art Council, for their end of year party titled Come As You Are. Installations in the space all captured the meanings of inclusivity, diversity, warmth and belonging.
Chameleon features a colourful melting waterfall with three “portals” into nature: trees and leaves, a blooming flower, and the ocean.
Nature is a universally healing experience for all, and we hoped that these small portals into its diversity of beauty would be a part of the emotions of the space. Melting colours cover the wall from floor to ceiling, bathing the room and its visitors in a colourful, inviting light.
From the beautiful slow waving of trees, the blooming of a flower, and slow movement of water and the density of smacks of jellyfish, these portals allow viewers a small look into the various ways we belong to the grand space that is nature and our Earth.
Immersion...
…in cinematic installation can be achieved not just by its scale, but also by its placement and use of colour and image. Chameleon welcomed guests to participate and use the lights as backdrops for photos and for points of conversation.
Content
Chameleon includes elements of both found footage and digital animation. The following video is part of the video loop for the right most portal, composited and edited by me.
The video includes footage from a concert, the ocean, and a variety of jellyfish at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, CA.
